Weekend Storm Erodes Beaches Throughout The State
|
Towns throughout the state of New Jersey continue to survey the damage mother nature left behind from a weekend storm. Some beaches are not in good shape.
During major storms like the one we experienced Saturday, a fair amount of beach eroision is expected. Sometimes the length of the rain can impact how severe the damage becomes. Dr. John Miller with New Jersey Sea Grant says they're seeing problems along Southern Ocean County towns and in parts of Monmouth County. The winter season has taken it's toll on the state as well as the beaches. Miller says "the storms we experienced at the end of last year and during the first two months of 2010 are not helping the situation."
Some beachfront communities need to take precautionary steps before a storm actually hits. Miller adds "it's not something towns can battle on the fly. This is something that is time consuming and it needs to be done months - sometimes years before a storm hits, so its safe to say towns - especially ones that are prone to flooding and erosion - should always have a battle plan in place."
It could be several days before cost estimates are determined. The storm was so strong at one point, the wind hit up to 70 miles an hour in some spots.
Parts of the state continue to clean up debris from the storm including downed trees, branches, wires and utility poles. Two people died during the wild weather. Much of the state experienced flooding and thousands still remain without power.
