NJ Insurance Companies Assess Storm Damage

Homeowners around New Jersey continue to assess the damage from tree limbs and whole trees in some cases, causing damage to their property from the latest storm. Insurance companies have been busy to say the least.

By all means if your property has suffered damage from the storm, get on the phone with your insurance company to make a claim. Take pictures and video and make minor repairs to prevent further damage. Rachel Moore with the New Jersey Insurance Council says keep careful records and receipts to be ready for the adjuster to make an assessment. She says there's no set timeframe however, for when you will be paid.

"Some companies have mobile claim services where they can cut you a check right there, some may give you an advance on your full claim so you can get started in paying for the claim." says Moore.

It's also a good idea to separate the damaged from the undamaged items for the adjuster, as well as prepare a list, and don't start cleaning up before you document the damage. It's important to note that if your damage is flood related, call your flood insurance company, as homeowners insurance policies generally don't cover flooding.
