U-S Census 2010 forms arrive in mailboxes this week, and it's certain that some will go unreturned. Who'll do the followup? Maybe you. Staffers at the Ocean County Census Headquarters in Toms River are taking applications now for up to 12 weeks of steady work in the field. They need about 2.000 workers for Ocean County alone, according to Recruitment Supervisor Mike Dodge at the Hooper Avenue office. He says most folks who are hired will work in and near their own neighborhoods.
"They would be working in teams," says Dodge, "and they would go door-to-door...not in anyone's home...to assist these people to fill out the 10-question census questionnaire."
The requirements are fairly straightforward. Applicants take a 28-question, multiple-choice basic skills test, and supply a valid photo driver's license, social security card or valid birth certificate. Also, there's no need to visit the Toms River office. Dodge says there are scores of satellite offices throughout the county.
For that effort, says Dodge, the rewards are considerable.
"We do pay $14 an hour for field operations people," he says, "those assigned a crew leader position are paid $15.50 an hour. Plus, the 50-cents-per-mile of their personal transportation."
Workers can log up to 40 hours in any given week, and hours are flexible based on availability, including evenings and weekends. Anyone currently collecting unemployment benefits can suspend them for the term of the job, and resume them later, with eligibility extended in ratio to the number of weeks worked.
