More and more families are feeling the brunt of the economic downturn. United Way of Ocean County Executive Director Lisa Giannascoli says a recent hunger and homelessness survey of 25 of the nation's largest cities shows "76 percent saw increases in the number of families who were finding themselves homeless and the average increase 10 percent increase just in one year."
Giannascoli says with funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act they've begun a Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing program. She says "this program was specifically designed for working families who experienced extreme financial distress brought on by a medical crisis or another unexpected event and who have a high likelihood of remaining independent and stably housed after a short period of assistance."
She says they've also started a fund for families who don't qualify for federal funding. Giannascoli says the United Way of Ocean County invites you to make a donation to the Homelessness Prevention Fund by calling (732) 240 - 0311
