Kutcher Tweets Denial Of Star Story
Friday, September 3, 2010
Ashton Kutcher and his legal team have taken aim at a tabloid after it published a cover story claiming he cheated on his wife, Demi Moore.
On Wednesday, the actor hit his Twitter account to lash out at Star magazine, which claimed in its latest issue that the celebrity couple's marriage "is in danger of falling apart" because the mag claimed the actor was allegedly "caught cheating with a sexy, young, 20-something."
"I think Star magazine calling me a "cheater" qualifies as defamation of character. I hope my lawyer agrees," Ashton Tweeted on Wednesday.
"STAR magazine — you don't get to stand behind 'freedom of the press' when you are writing fiction," he added.
Ashton's wife, Demi, backed him up, reTweeting her husband and adding her two cents.

Leno's Ratings Lower Than Conan
Friday, September 3, 2010
NBC might have summer's most-watched show in "America's Got Talent," but the network's late-night ratings aren't so hot.
"The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" is pulling a smaller number among adults aged 18 to 49, an elusive demographic coveted by advertiser, than when Conan O'Brien hosted the show last year. In fact, this summer is the lowest-rated "Tonight Show" on record, though such feats have become increasingly common on broadcast across the board.
Since the end of the broadcast season in May, Leno is averaging 3.8 million viewers and a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating (each ratings point in that demo equals about 1.3 million viewers). That's a 12 percent improvement in total audience compared with O'Brien, though off 23 percent in the demo and down in both measurements compared with Leno's performance two years ago.
His percentages greatly improve if comparisons begin a few weeks deeper into the summer so "Tonight" is not facing O'Brien's opening weeks hosting the show, though O'Brien is tops in the demo either way.
Even with the reduced rating, Leno is back to beating his top rival, CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman," by a healthy 22 percent in both metrics. CBS counters that Letterman's ratings are at least holding steady compared with last summer, when Letterman hit an all-time low of his own.
Other late-night hosts have been showing stability too, with NBC's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," CBS' "The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson" and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" maintaining their demo averages, and Fallon and Kimmel even sporting gains in total viewers.
Heading into the fall, NBC's affiliates say that, if anything, they're pleased about the schedule in general and late-night in particular. Last year, stations contended with the expected ratings decline of putting Leno at 10 p.m. and the uncertainty of O'Brien hosting "Tonight." Station managers are looking forward to having scripted dramas back in late primetime, which in turn should fuel audience momentum into late-night.
There's an expectation that it's nearly impossible not to have a better story to tell advertisers in the fall, especially with NBC stocking up on dramas like high-concept series "The Event" and shows from top-shelf producers Dick Wolf ("Law & Order: Los Angeles"), Jerry Bruckheimer ("Chase") and J.J. Abrams ("Undercovers").
"There's been a lot of NBC stations that have suffered significant declines in late prime, and that's not going to happen with this lineup based on the estimates buyers are getting," said Eric Lassberg, president and GM of NBC affiliate KXAN-TV Austin. "All evidence points to our ratings going up (at 10 p.m.)."

Paris Hilton was banned Wednesday from two Wynn resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, and her boyfriend was dismissed as a nightclub partner following their arrests in a vehicle that police said reeked of marijuana.
Wynn Resorts Ltd. spokeswoman Jennifer Dunne told The Associated Press that Hilton is barred from Wynn Las Vegas and Encore.
Meanwhile, boyfriend Cy Waits was "separated" from his job after less than a week as top managing partner of the Tryst Nightclub at Wynn and XS The Nightclub at Encore, Dunne said in a statement.
Waits and a lawyer and publicist for the 29-year-old Hilton did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The moves come after Hilton was arrested Friday for investigation of felony cocaine possession. Waits was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Charges have not yet been filed.
Hilton was arrested inside the Wynn resort, where a police lieutenant reported a small plastic bag containing 0.8 grams of cocaine fell into his hand when Hilton reached for a tube of lip balm in a purse.
The celebrity socialite is scheduled for arraignment Oct. 27 and would face probation if convicted.
A police report made public Wednesday said the suspected butt of a marijuana cigarette was found in the Cadillac Escalade in which the couple was stopped in front of the Wynn Las Vegas hotel-casino.
Waits, 34, was driving. He had bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol and wobbled as he failed balance and walk-and-turn field sobriety tests, the arresting officer said.
Attorney Richard Schonfeld, who represents Waits, said his client passed an eye test checking the dilation of his pupils. Schonfeld said he was troubled that Waits wasn't stopped because of a traffic infraction "or any other indication that he was impaired while driving."
Waits allowed blood to be drawn when he was booked into the Clark County jail in downtown Las Vegas, Officer Bill Cassell said. Results won't be released until the case reaches court.
Waits spent a night in jail on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence before being freed on $2,000 bail with a Nov. 29 court date.
Dunne said Waits' twin brother, Jesse Waits, is continuing as general partner of the Wynn resorts' Tryst and XS clubs.
The brothers were hired by Steve Wynn five years ago and became the casino owner's top club managers last week when Wynn bought out Victor Drai.

It's Called Conan
Thursday, September 2, 2010
There's Madonna, Oprah and now ... "Conan."
Conan O'Brien took the simple approach Wednesday in announcing the name of his new talk show on TBS.
"Conan" will kick off Nov. 8.
He posted a YouTube video announcing the show's name to his fans. He scrawled the name on a white sheet of paper using a black marking pen.
O'Brien has finished a comedy concert tour. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his short-lived stint as NBC "Tonight" show host that ended amid much drama in January, but lost to Jon Stewart and Comedy Central's "The Daily Show."

Douglas Begins Chemo, Visits Letterman
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
Michael Douglas says he faces an "eight-week struggle" against throat cancer but is optimistic about his chances for recovery.
During an appearance Tuesday on David Letterman's Late Show, the actor said he had just finished his first week of radiation and chemotherapy. That drew a surprised reaction from Letterman. "You've never looked better to me, and this proves that you're a tough guy, for God's sakes," the talk-show host said, drawing cheers from the studio audience, according to a CBS news release.
"Let's just say ... I'm pretty lit up right now," Douglas replied.
The disease was diagnosed three weeks ago, he said, although he had complained of a very sore throat earlier this year and had undergone testing that failed to find a cause.
Douglas, 65, who has two children with Catherine Zeta-Jones, said he enjoyed the summer traveling with his family before returning to the doctor. A biopsy found he had late, stage-four cancer, "which is intense, and so they've had to go at it," he said.
However, Douglas said, the cancer remains above the neck and that means expectations are good, with an 80% or better chance of recovery.
Asked by Letterman about his personal habits, he said he had smoked and consumed alcohol.
According to a National Institutes of Health website, use of tobacco or alcohol are among the factors that put people at risk of developing throat cancer. Combining tobacco and drinking increases the risk.
Most throat cancer develops in people older than 50, with men more likely than women to get the disease, the NIH site says.
Letterman wished Douglas good luck, then said, "Wow, boy, I feel like I want to do something for you. Can I do something for you?"
"Ahh, give me a hug," Douglas responded, according to a CBS transcript.
Douglas stars in the upcoming film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, a sequel to Wall Street (1987), for which he won a best-actor Oscar.

Bravo is renewing two of its "Real Housewives" hits for additional seasons as Wednesday night's "New Jersey" reunion sets a ratings record.

Part One of the episode, which features all the cast in the same room for the first time this season, drew a steep 3.9 million viewers. That's the highest-rated single telecast ever in the key demos in "Real Housewives" franchise history, as well as the most-watched episode of the season.

UPDATE! Snooki's Tweets An Answer
Tuesday, August 31, 2010

For a guy who pops the question while shirtless on the cover of a magazine, the only appropriate way to reciprocate an answer is with an equally impersonal method: via Twitter.
"Jersey Shore" star Nicole (Snooki) Polizzi has taken to Twitter one day after her new boyfriend, Jeff Miranda, posed on bended knee wearing only fatigue pants and a hat, along with the words "Will You Marry Me?" printed across the cover of Steppin' Out.
"Just want to set the record straight," the 22-year-old wrote Tuesday. "I'm single and I'm not going to get married!"
While the rejection may not be a surprise to anyone but Miranda, the hard-partying reality star doesn't seem ready to settle down with a "gorilla juicehead" anytime soon.
Snooks first met the former Iraq War veteran when she was partying Aug. 13 at club Karma, a Seaside Heights, N.J., nightspot often frequented by the cast of the MTV reality show.
"I want us to be together forever. I could see us having children. I want to pop the question to her," Miranda, 24, told Steppin' Out of his two-week-old relationship with the pint-sized star, according to RadarOnline.com. "If we got married we would be the best parents around. She's so loving and puts everyone else before herself. She'll be a great mother."
"If people could see us together they would think we're a match made in heaven," he added.
Though Snooki's rejection may come as a blow to Miranda, one party that's presumably pleased with the outcome is MTV. Not only will the couple's drama make for good TV, the network can continue banking on their most marketable hard-partying cast member.

Lohan Talks About "Dabbling"
Tuesday, August 31, 2010
Lindsay Lohan wants your respect.
In the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, the 24-year-old actress admits making mistakes in the past and "dabbling in certain things."
But in a July interview with the magazine before she served 14 days in jail followed by 23 days of inpatient rehab, she defended her actions, saying she was young and curious and was associating with the wrong people.
"So many people around me would say they cared for the wrong reasons," Lohan said. "A lot of people were pulling from me, taking from me and not giving. I had a lot of people that were there for me for, you know, the party."
Lohan says she used to get her news from tabloids, which she now calls "scary and sad."
"I would look up to those girls ... the Britneys and whatever," she said. "And I would be like, I want to be like that."
Despite everything, Lohan is confident in her acting abilities and future: "I don't care what anyone says. I know that I'm a damn good actress."
She says she'll do whatever it takes to fix her party-girl image.
"I want my career back," she said. "I want the respect that I had when I was doing great movies. And if that takes not going out to a club at night, then so be it. It's not fun anyway."
She also addresses issues with her father, Michael Lohan, saying, "I think my biggest focus for myself is learning how to continue to get through the trauma that my father has caused in my life."
Lohan talks about the mixed signals of seeing her father in court crying over her but then speaking to the media afterward.
Nancy Jo Sales, who wrote the article, says Lohan got emotional when talking about her younger sister Ali's presence in the courtroom. Lohan described seeing her sister cry as heartbreaking.
Lohan has a busy schedule ahead of her. She's required to comply with outpatient rehab, which includes two psychotherapy, two behavior therapy and five 12-step sessions a week.
Her next movie, "Machete," directed by Robert Rodriguez, hits theaters on Sept. 3.
She also has an apparel line, 6126, for which she designs clothes and signs off on decisions.
The October issue of "Vanity Fair" hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on Thursday and nationwide on Sept. 7.

Emmy Split In Half?
Tuesday, August 31, 2010
Will the Primetime Emmys be divided into two shows?
That's just one of the ideas circulating Monday, the day after the 62nd Primetime Emmys Awards show drew an on-par 13 million viewers for NBC according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The major TV networks have broached the idea with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences of expanding the number of networks that share in the rotation of the Primetime Emmy awards show to include cable networks and possibly to split it into two separate shows, one for broadcast and another to air on cable or pay TV.
These and other ideas came up in a meeting between executives of CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC in early August, according to a report on the Wall Street Journal's website Monday.
While the audience for Sunday's show was up from 2008, it was still down by nearly a third from 2002, the last time the major networks negotiated a license agreement with ATAS to carry the show in a rotating "wheel," which has seen each of the four air the program twice over the past eight years.
The idea of expanding who carries the program, and even splitting it into more than one show, would address a major concern of broadcasters, who compete fiercely in the series category, both for scripted and reality programming, but have all but abdicated the movie of the week, long-form and miniseries type of programs to cable and especially to pay TV. The most notable is HBO, which again was the top winner at the Emmys, both on Sunday and a week earlier at the Creative Arts Emmys.
The idea seems to be having one Primetime Emmys show for the series categories, which would air on a broadcast network, and another for the long-form programs, which would air on a cable or pay TV service. If it was on pay TV, based on past discussions, the pay wall -- which would exclude nonsubscribers -- would be dropped for that night, so all cable subscribers could see the show
Broadcast executives, in off-the-record conversations with THR, have previously expressed their frustration with airing a show that is mostly a huge promotional postcard for HBO and cable. Having separate shows could solve that problem.
It could also open the way for ATAS, which depends on the Emmy show for most of its budget, to have additional products to license and ultimately bring in even more revenue. Each show in this era would also have multiplatform components on the Internet and over mobile devices, as well as pay-per-view, home video and other ancillary revenue.
So what is a problem could become a solution for ATAS, which at the moment is not commenting on any of this

Mad Men, Modern Family Earn Top Emmy Honors
Monday, August 30, 2010
AMC's period drama Mad Men claimed its third straight Emmy and ABC's hit comedy Modern Family got its first in a night that honored stalwarts and newcomers alike.
Jim Parsons won the Emmy for best actor in a comedy, his first, for playing lovable nerd Sheldon in CBS' hit The Big Bang Theory, while Edie Falco, who won three Emmys for playing a Mob wife on The Sopranos, took home a fourth, for Showtime comedy Nurse Jackie.
HBO claimed every award in the movies and miniseries category: The Pacific won best miniseries and Temple Grandin won best movie and awards for best actress Claire Danes, supporting actors David Strathairn and Julia Ormond.
Al Pacino won the best-actor Emmy for portraying assisted-suicide expert Dr. Jack Kevorkian in HBO's You Don't Know Jack.
AMC, with four awards, had more than any broadcast network: Bryan Cranston won his third consecutive Emmy for playing teacher-turned-meth dealer Walter White in AMC's twisted drama Breaking Bad, Aaron Paul won for his supporting role in that series and Mad Men won for writing.
Elsewhere, Kyra Sedgwick was a first-time winner as best actress for her Southern detective in TNT drama The Closer, and Archie Panjabi of CBS' freshman hit The Good Wife won for supporting actress in a drama.
Eric Stonestreet, the flamboyant Cameron on Modern Family, won best supporting actor in a comedy, and Jane Lynch, the conniving cheerleading coach of Fox's musical Glee, won best supporting actress in a comedy.
Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won its eighth consecutive Emmy as best variety/music/comedy series. And in the reality-competition series category, Bravo's Top Chef broke the seven-year winning streak of CBS' The Amazing Race, which has won every year since the category was created in 2003.
In other honors, Modern Family and Mad Men won top comedy and drama-writing Emmys, while Glee and Dexter won for directing. George Clooney won the TV Academy's fourth Humanitarian Award. And CBS' Tony Awards and NBC's Winter Olympics opening ceremonies won Emmys for writing and directing, respectively, in the variety/music/comedy specials category.
The 62nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards were presented at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, with Jimmy Fallon hosting on NBC.

3 Incoming To SNL
Monday, August 30, 2010
Saturday Night Live" is adding three new cast members this year -- suggesting some of the comedy show's best-known players won't be back.
Taran Killam, a refugee from the cast of the long-running sitcom "Scrubs," and two young comedians from Chicago -- Paul Brittain and Vanessa Bayer -- have been signed to the cast, according to several reports over the weekend.
News of the signings came just a day after it was announced Will Forte, who's been on "SNL" for eight years and was perhaps best know for his "McGruber" take-off, was leaving the show.
Lorne Michaels, the show's creator and longtime producer, always creates a stir just before the beginning of each season because he refuses to tell the cast who will be coming back.
Regulars such as "Weekend Update" anchor Seth Meyers, Andy Samberg, Jason Sudeikis and Kenan Thompson are among those who have not yet said if they are being re-hired, according to reports.
Michaels has been sighted in Chicago a bunch of times this summer, scouting new talent in the city famous for its improv comedy companies.
Among the new cast members, Killam, 28, is by far the best known. He is the longtime boyfriend of "How I Met Your Mom" star Cobie Smulders and the father of a 1-year-old baby with her. He became free when the proposed series he'd been working on -- the Arianna Huffington-produced comedy called "Freshman," about three first-term congressmen living together in the same D.C. apartment -- was not picked up by ABC.
Brittain and Bayer are little known outside Chicago, where they have starred in stage comedies and done stand-up. The connection between Chicago comedians and "SNL" dates back to the earliest days of the show.
John Belushi, Bill Murray, John Candy, Gilda Radner, Mike Myers, Chris Farley and Tina Fey were all recruited out of the ranks of Windy City comics, especially the famous Second City improv troupe.
"SNL" starts the new season -- its 36th -- in late September.
