New HBO Series Based In Jersey Is All About Murder, Corruption And Mayhem

First there was The Sopranos, then Jersey Shore.

Have you noticed? Whenever a TV series is set in Jersey, the plot always seems to revolve around gangsters, bimbos or bozos.

But that appears to be changing next month, when HBO will launch a new series…about corruption, murder and mayhem.

The show, called Boardwalk Empire, is set in Atlantic City during the Prohibition era, in the 1920's, and Steve Buscemi stars as Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, a corrupt politician who frequently settles disputes with a pistol or a shotgun.

At one point during the first episode, Nucky tells someone "everything you see here - it's mine- buy a drink, a bet, ride the Ferris wheel - if you steal from my men, you steal from me…you want to see how I do business? Show your face again in Atlantic City."

Martin Scorsese directed the pilot episode, which is scheduled to air September 19th.

Ironically, the show comes on just as Governor Christie is pressing ahead with a plan to begin to rehabilitate the image of Atlantic City. He wants it to become known as a family vacation destination - not simply a gambling mecca surrounded by dangerous and run-down neighborhoods. The Governor has said a complete make-over is necessary, in order for Atlantic City to be able to attract more visitors, and generate more revenue for the state.
